*Grimod calls himself “un vieux amateur,”  however, the French use of the word “amateur” implies the expertise of a devoted hobbyist, which the English version does not.

**refers to the French Republican Calendar introduced on October 24, 1793 but which retroactively dated the start of year I to 22 September, 1793.
