The translation above comes from the first edition of the first year (1803) of the Almanach des Gourmands. I transcribed the text by hand using copies in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Schlesinger Library/Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University.

To correct my transcription of the text, I compared the text of the first edition to that of the second edition. I have noted the few cases in which Grimod de la Reynière made substantive changes to the text (as opposed to spelling corrections, etc.).

      Dear Michael,

      YES, the project will continue and I’ll have September up next week. The translation got delayed because the Bibliothèque nationale sent the copies of the 1st and 2nd editions of the first year of the Almanach away for conservation. However, just yesterday I finished the transcription using the copies at the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute. I’ll be back in Paris on Monday and will dive in from then on.

      Grimod has never previously been translated, so it’s a fun project in many ways. Thanks for your interest! – Carolin

    As you proceed with your translation, please consider locating a copy of the 1807 edition and adding a translation for a recipe in that edition which is the earliest identifed recipe which pairs pasta with tomatoes (even earlier than in any Italian cookbook, and 40 years before an American cookbook).

      Hi Joe, this is one of many fascinating aspects to Grimod’s Almanach, which I eventually hope to cover. Grimod did write about Italian pasta in the 1803 edition that I’m following this year (the translation is up)–but, you are correct, he doesn’t pair it with tomatoes. These he doesn’t talk about until DECEMBER (advising people against buying the hothouse varieties–still good advice!) but he has some fascinating information about its introduction into Paris by the numerous Provençaux who migrated there after the French Revolution. Stay tuned!
